Field Guides 4 Replies

Started by tony prastaro. Last reply by Frank Schloegel Jan 22.

I was just wondering what field guides people are using out in the field. Or what guides are people's favorites. I know the Peterson's is going to be on everyone's list. I have been using the Natio... Read More »

I'm about 99% sure i saw a black guillemot off the beach at Mount Loretto in Staten Island. I don't know what else it could have been, it definitely was not a cormorant, but I would have liked to h... Read More »

Scott's Oriole in Union Square?!

An immature oriole first found in Union Square on December 4 by Alice Deutsch and Lenore Swenson has been tentatively identified as a Scott's Oriole. Long Day Out

Today, Tom Kerr and I decided to try and get a look at several of the rarer birds that have been seen on L.I. lately (without making the trip out to Montauk). We decided to try for the Greater White Fronted Goose reported at Massapequa Lake; the Townsend's Solitaire at Oak Beach and the Black Headed Gull at Sunken Meadow. I'm happy to repeort that we went two for three with only the White Fronted Goose being M.I.A. Besides our targeted birds it was everything else we saw as well (including se…

Driving

I drove from Buffalo to NYC today and saw some nice raptors including several red-tailed hawks, a kestrel and a rough-legged hawk (life bird). As long as I keep my eyes on the road too, birdwatching helps pass the 7 hour drive.

Northern Shrike in Kissena Park, Queens

Jean Loscalzo reports a Northern Shrike in Kissena Park in Queens. And I'm stuck in my day job. :-( Here are her directions:

Exit the LIE at the Kissena Blvd exit, and go north (away from Queens College).

The next large intersection will be Booth Memorial Ave; make a right (heading east)

Go approx 1/4 mile to the intersection of Parsons Blv…
